La leyenda de Quetzalcóatl viene de la civilización tolteca, una civilización muy antigua, más antigua que los aztecas. A este dios se le describía como un hombre de tez clara, barba, cabellos rubios, con un dominio de diversas prácticas como la agricultura, la orfebrería, la navegación y la astronomía. Algunos piensan que tal vez era una persona europea que llegó por error a este continente y decidió tratar de regresar a su continente, pero es algo que no se sabe con precisión.

Sin embargo, en su apogeo, Quetzalcóatl fue engañado por tres dioses: Tezcatlipoca, Huitzilopochtil y Xipe Tótec, quienes hicieron que Quetzalcóatl se embriagara con pulque y más tarde tuviera relaciones sexuales con su hermana.

Se dice que cuando los españoles llegaron muchos pensaron que era Quetzalcoatl, buscando venganza contra los aztecas. Es por eso que los recibieron con tesoros sin siquiera conocerlos, aún está en discusión pero no se sabe con precisión qué pasó.
